For example, suppose that processor #2, while interpreting a running application program, encounters the instruction

Memory-mapped I/O is a pop interface because it provides a compatible memory-similar load and store interface to every bus module that implements it. On the other hand, the designer must be cautious in trying to extend the retention-mapped model too far.
